Man Guilty of Social Security Fraud

A Ceres man has pleaded guilty to Social Security fraud. The man was collecting and cashing checks of a deceased woman.

Charles Francis Sheppard, 56, of Ceres, pleaded guilty Monday to theft of government property, according to U.S. Attorney Benjamin Wagner.

According to the plea agreement, from 1988 to 2009, Mr. Sheppard received the Social Security retirement benefits of a legitimate recipient who had died in 1988.

Mr. Sheppard was on the deceased’s death certificate as the person to be notified. As such, he identified the deceased and provided her personal information to the county recorder who issued the certificate of death.

Another Senator Defends Social Security

U.S. Senator Richard Blumenthal has become another person to come out in defense of Social Security. Blumenthal has joined the Defending Social Security Caucus along with other senators.

U.S. Sen. Richard Blumenthal (D-CT) has joined the Defending Social Security Caucus, a group of senators dedicated to strengthening Social Security and protecting the program from efforts to reduce or eliminate benefits.

The program currently benifits millions of seniors across America, including more than 600,000 retired workers in Connecticut.

“I am excited to join the Defending Social Security Caucus to continue my work to make sure that these promises made to Connecticut’s seniors are not broken,” Blumenthal said. “I look forward to working with my colleagues to strengthen and protect this vital program.”

Blumenthal, a longtime advocate for the preservation and strengthening of Social Security, is a member of… continue reading

The device contained payroll reports from Warner Creek Correctional Facility in Lakeview, Deer Ridge Correctional Institution in Madras and Shutter Creek Correctional Institution in North Bend.

The reports held personal information about fewer than 550 staff members, including names and pay-stub data, Hohn said. The agency employs about 4,500 people statewide.

More seriously, about 300 of those employees also had their Social Security numbers listed in the payroll reports. Only employees at Warner Creek and Deer Ridge potentially had… continue reading
